
Beiyi Hu
Beiyi Hu is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology at Oberlin College and Conservatory. Her research focuses on ethnoracial inequalities, color-blind racism, international migration, and geographical sociology, with a particular emphasis on Sweden.
Beiyi’s recent research investigates the narrative of Swedish exceptionalism and examines how race is perceived and operates in ostensibly color-blind Sweden. Her work illuminates the complex ways race shapes individuals’ lives, influencing identity formation, labor market opportunities, residential patterns, and everyday interactions.
Her scholarship has been featured in several academic publications, including Contexts, Metropolitics, Social Sciences, Contemporary Sociology, and New Genetics and Society.
Beiyi earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She also holds an L.L.B. in Sociology from Minzu University of China and an M.A. in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago.
